Upper South Studio was started in 1979 as an experiment in art and commerce. The concept was to set up a production company and publishing house for Laurence Rosen's own work. Eventually, it grew and evolved to become devoted to serving a global clientele in the hospitality, gaming, and travel industries.

That growth has been primarily managed by Susan Rosen, co-founder and principal, who continues to oversee the ongoing evolution of Upper South.

The Studio’s designs range from printing on fabric, to developing environments and branded products. Our core value of client collaboration is based on the conviction that design is both project driven and site-specific.

For example, Upper South Studio designs have branded the Aston Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii, with motifs for the entire interior as well as staff Hawaiian shirts. The Studio also developed private label pareos, graphics and collateral design.

For The Lodge at Pebble Beach, Upper South’s designs for the suites emphasized the regional sense of place and the Spanish colonial traditions of California.

Upper South Studio believes compelling design can define and recall experience. When guests are emotionally engaged, traditional hospitality becomes environmental theater.
